Neuropixels Ultra Probe

The Neuropixels probes have been transformative in neuroscience since its first release in 2017. Before Neuropixels, the maximum number of recording sites on a single probe shank is limited to 64, in most labs. Neuropixels probes are equipped with 960 sites on a single probe shank, with 384 sites accessible simultaneously. This enabled researchers to record hundreds of neurons at the same time, and thousands of neurons with multiple probes.

what are the current limitations of extracellular recording? will higher density of recording sites reveal more detailed information on neural activities and improve spike sorting quality? In the Steinmetz lab, we are looking into these questions with new versions of Neuropixels probes.
